Human editing

Understanding the service

What this service is, and what it isn't

✅ What it is

  • A professional editing pass on an existing AI translation
  • Focus on natural flow, dialogue rhythm, grammar and stylistic coherence
  • Native French precision applied to machine output
  • Register and tu/vous consistency throughout the entire manuscript
  • Genre-fluent editing: I know how French romance, thriller and fantasy read
  • A cost-effective path to genuinely publication-ready French text
Ideal for: fiction authors using ScribeShadow, DeepL or ChatGPT as a first draft, and self-published writers who want to reduce translation costs without sacrificing quality.

❌ What it is not

  • Not a full human translation from scratch
  • Not a proofread of original French text (that's a separate service)
  • Not a fix for a source text with deep structural problems
Need a full translation instead? If your book hasn't been translated yet, my EN → FR Translation service handles everything from the first word to the final proofread.
The difference it makes

AI can translate words. A human editor understands stories.

AI translation tools have come a long way. For a lot of fiction, they produce a solid first draft, good enough to work from. But there's a gap between "good enough to work from" and "good enough to publish", and that gap is exactly what I close.

I've been editing and translating literary fiction professionally for over six years. In that time, I've read thousands of pages of French romance, thriller, and fantasy, and I know precisely what makes a French reader feel at home in a book: the rhythm of a sentence that lands, the dialogue tag that doesn't stick out, the cultural nuance that gets adapted instead of just translated literally.

"Your French readers deserve to feel every emotion exactly as you intended, not a machine approximation of it."

That's not something you can automate. But it is something you can fix, affordably and efficiently, with the right editorial eye.

Voice preservation

Your characters speak the way you wrote them, not the way an algorithm guessed. Personality and tone are protected throughout.

Genre fluency

Romance, thriller, fantasy, contemporary: each genre has its own French codes, and I know them well enough to apply them instinctively.

Register & politeness levels

The tu/vous distinction alone causes endless problems for AI tools. I fix it consistently, based on context and character relationships.

Cultural adaptation

Idioms, expressions and cultural references are adapted for a French audience, not just translated word-for-word into something that sounds foreign.

Publication-ready quality

The final text passes as native French: no telltale machine patterns, no awkward structures, no uncanny valley prose.

FAQ

Questions I get asked most.

How long does editing take?
For a standard 80,000-word romance novel at Level 2, expect around 2 to 3 weeks. A Level 1 pass on the same length takes roughly one week. I'll give you a precise delivery date in your quote and I hold to it. If your publication date is time-sensitive, mention it in your first message and I'll do my best to accommodate you.
Will you change my writing style?
No. My job is to make the translation read naturally in French, not to impose my own style on your story. Your voice, your character quirks, your narrative tone: all of it stays intact. I fix what's mechanical and awkward, and I leave the rest exactly as you wrote it. Every change is tracked in Word, so you approve each one individually.
What genres do you work with?
Primarily fiction: romance (contemporary, historical, romantic suspense, dark romance), thriller, fantasy, urban fantasy, and literary fiction. I'm happy to look at other genres too. Just send a sample and we'll see if it's a good fit.
Is this cheaper than a full human translation?
Significantly, yes. A full human literary translation typically costs between €0.10 and €0.15 per word. AI-assisted editing at Level 2 (€0.06/word) gives you a publication-ready result at roughly half that price, as long as the AI translation is already a reasonable starting point. That's exactly why this service exists: to close the quality gap affordably.
Do you offer a sample edit before I commit?
Yes, and I actively encourage it. Send me a chapter (or around 2,000 words) and I'll edit a section of it for free, so you can see the quality and approach before making any decision. There's no obligation on your end.
